Student Advisory Council

Background to the School Advisory Council

In 2025, St Mary’s transitioned from the former Catholic School Board to a Catholic School Advisory Council, in line with Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) governance structures.

The School Advisory Council is a collaborative, consultative body made up of parents and parish community members, including the Parish Priest. Working in partnership with the Principal, the Council plays an important role in supporting the Catholic ethos of the school and contributing to thoughtful, informed school governance.

The Advisory Council provides advice and support to the Principal and serves as a forum for shared reflection, dialogue, and community voice in the life of the school.

Role of the School Advisory Council

In accordance with CEWA guidelines, the School Advisory Council:

  • Works collegially with the Principal as a support and sounding board.
  • Engages in informed discussion regarding school financial matters, including financial performance against budget, sustainability, and recurrent and capital funding.
  • Endorses the Principal’s proposed annual school budget, including tuition fees and charges, prior to submission to CEWA for approval.
  • Participates, where required, in Principal appointment panels in accordance with CEWA policy.
  • Offers advice on planning and development to support the current and future needs of students.
  • Assists in sharing relevant information and strengthening communication within the school community.

Criteria for Membership of the School Advisory Council

Members of the School Advisory Council are people who:

  • Are committed to and supportive of Catholic education.
  • Have a genuine interest in the wellbeing of all students and staff.
  • Are willing to serve the school and parish community.
  • Can work respectfully, collaboratively, and constructively with others.
  • Have the time and capacity to engage meaningfully in Council responsibilities.
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality in Council matters.
  • Bring skills, experience, or perspectives that will enrich the work of the Council.
