LIBRARY

This building housed the original school built on 1900. It held both Primary and Secondary students and was called St Mary’s High School. Coolgardie Stone was used to construct the beautiful outer brickwork.
St Mary’s was flourishing in the community. In 1905 a report in the Western Mail listed the Catholic Schools in the State in order of placement by the inspector of the Catholic Schools, examiner Mr James Toss. In that list St Marys Kalgoorlie is at No 2 and St Camillus South Kalgoorlie in the No 10 position; there were more than 33 school on the whole list. Pupil numbers at St Marys’ had grown to 400 by 1910.
This building was once divided into classrooms. There are numerous doors which would have given entry to separate rooms. A tin fence separated the school building from the Convent building at the back.
In 2000, the mezzanine floor was added to house teacher resources and a small art room removed at the very back of the library. This original building has been in constant use since 1900 when it was first built and continues to be used and loved by the current children of St Mary’s as a Library and learning space.
